The classic white search box that defined the web for a generation is no more. Google retired its original text field on Tuesday and replaced it with a dynamic AI-powered interface. The new search box accepts text, images, PDFs, videos and even open browser tabs as queries. It is the most significant overhaul to the iconic search interface since its debut 25 years ago.
The redesign turns the search box from a simple input field into a conversational partner. The box now expands to accommodate longer, more detailed questions. Users can upload files directly into the search bar. Google also added an AI query suggestion system that goes beyond simple autocomplete. The system helps users formulate complex questions that the new AI search handles best. Liz Reid, Google's vice president and head of Search, called it the biggest upgrade to the search box since its creation.
Why This Matters
The change signals the end of keyword-based search as the primary way people find information online. For billions of users, the shift means learning a new way to ask questions. For Google, the redesign protects its core revenue source as competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT threaten traditional search. The new interface keeps users inside Google's ecosystem for longer, more complex conversations. It also removes the friction between traditional search results and AI-generated answers.
Google is merging its AI Overviews and AI Mode features into one seamless experience. Users can now type a question, see an AI summary alongside traditional links and continue a back-and-forth conversation without switching screens. Reid said the goal was to make users feel they get the best experience without having to choose between interfaces.
One Billion Users and Doubling Queries
The rapid adoption of AI features convinced Google it was time to redesign the entry point. AI Mode reached one billion monthly users within its first year. Queries on the feature doubled every quarter since launch. AI Overviews now reach 2.5 billion users each month. Overall search volume hit an all-time high last quarter. These numbers showed that user behavior is already shifting from short keywords to richer, conversational queries.
The new search box begins rolling out immediately in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available. The update will appear on mobile and desktop worldwide.
