Matt Cole, a hobbyist who posted his findings on the DataHoarder subreddit, pushed 351 cards to destruction by writing a combined 133 petabytes of data. Amazon Basics received an honorable mention because none of the cards have failed after 788 days and 4.2PB of data written. However, Cole noted that Amazon could change the NAND chips without notice, which makes long-term consistency uncertain. The high-endurance and industrial-grade tables tell a differ story. SanDisk high-endurance cards failed six out of seven times. By comparison, TEAMGROUP and Transend high-endurance cards had zero failures, and Samsung high-endurance only one. The industrial-grade Kingston cards lasted 141,600 cycles on average.

Why This Matters

For anyone rely on microSD cards in cameras, drones, dash cams or single-board computers, this test provides real-world expectations for endurance. The biggest takeaway is that SanDisk, a brand trusted by millions, may not be the safest bet for heavy-write workloads. The experiment also highlights that cheap or generic cards such as Amazon Basics can sometimes deliver excellent endurance, though their consistency is not guaranteed.
