TikTok users have stumbled upon a troubling trend: tearful Black women in cowboy attire pleading for sales of handmade belt buckles. The videos tug at heartstrings, but the creators are not real. These AI-generated avatars are part of a growing scheme to sell cheap, mass-produced products through dropshipping.
The Rise of Fake AI Influencers
One example is the profile Aliyahsbuckles.store. In a TikTok video posted in March, an avatar named Aliyah cries on camera. The text reads: "Even as a black woman, I have more faith that white women will stay 13 seconds to save my belt buckle business." The image shows a light-skinned Black woman in western gear wiping a tear.
The problem? Aliyah does not exist. The store sells identical metal buckles available from bulk suppliers. The handmade claim is a lie. This tactic, known as dropshipping, means the seller never handles inventory. Instead, items ship directly from factories, often on platforms like Shein.
How the Scam Works
Scammers generate realistic avatars using AI tools. They script emotional appeals to boost engagement and drive sales. The racial component is deliberate. Perpetrators exploit stereotypes to appear authentic or evoke sympathy from buyers. The same account may use multiple fake identities.
These videos appear on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram. The products range from belt buckles to clothing. The goal is rapid sales before platforms detect the fraud. Victims pay for low-quality items that may never arrive, while scammers pocket the money.
Why This Matters
Consumers lose money and trust. The deception harms real Black small business owners who struggle to compete against fake, attention-grabbing posts. Social media platforms host the content, profiting from ads while failing to vet sellers. The use of AI to create fake ethnic representations raises ethical and regulatory questions. Regulators have not caught up with this form of digital blackface.
Buyers should scrutinize seller profiles. Check for verified accounts, real customer reviews and signs of AI generation. If a sales pitch seems too emotionally manipulative, it likely is. Report suspicious accounts to the platform.
