Sonos has released the Play, its first new speaker since the company’s app meltdown in 2024. The portable device is a direct attempt to win back customers after a turbulent two years.

The Play works as both a WiFi bookshelf speaker and a Bluetooth mobile speaker. It includes water resistance and long battery life. The company calls it a jack of all trades for home or away use.

The App Disaster That Shook Sonos

In May 2024, Sonos launched a redesigned app that removed popular features and caused instability. Longtime users reported broken playback, missing settings and connection failures. The backlash was swift and severe.

The company lost trust and market share. Its CEO stepped down. Sonos spent much of 2025 restoring core functions and stabilizing the platform. The Play represents the first truly new hardware since that crisis began.

Sonos says the speaker is designed to work seamlessly with the rebuilt app. The company is betting that a reliable, flexible product can help turn the page.

What the Play Offers

The Play supports both WiFi for home use and Bluetooth for on the go. It is portable with a battery rated for extended playback. It also has an IP rating for water resistance, making it suitable for outdoor use.

The speaker is smaller than Sonos’s home-focused models but larger than a typical portable Bluetooth speaker. It aims to bridge the gap between stationary multiroom audio and casual mobile listening.

Sonos has not yet released full pricing or availability details. The company is expected to position the Play as a midrange option below its premium line.

Why This Matters

Sonos faces stiff competition from portable speakers made by JBL, Bose and others. But its strength has always been multiroom WiFi audio with high sound quality. The app crisis damaged that reputation.

For existing Sonos owners, the Play offers a way to extend their system into new rooms or outdoor spaces. For new buyers, it is a lower cost entry point into the Sonos ecosystem. But trust remains the biggest hurdle.

If the app is stable and the speaker performs well, Sonos may recover quickly. If not, the company could continue to lose ground. The Play is a high stakes product in a critical moment for the brand.
