OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, an AI agent embedded within its chatbot that can independently execute complex tasks across email, calendars and messaging platforms. The product, powered by a new GPT-5.6 model, marks the company's most direct attempt yet to reposition ChatGPT as an autonomous workplace platform rather than a conversational tool.

What You Need to Know

ChatGPT Work runs on a persistent cloud-based virtual machine accessible from any device, setting it apart from competitors that require a local computer to remain active. The agent can connect to Slack, Gmail and GitHub through MCP-based plugins, and it is available to all paid OpenAI tiers including Plus subscribers. OpenAI says the tool is designed to handle multi-step projects that may take hours, from building reports to managing scheduling conflicts.

Always-On Cloud Architecture

ChatGPT Work operates on a dedicated virtual machine hosted on OpenAI's servers. That setup frees users from needing to keep their own computer running. Product manager Ty Geri said the always-on approach is a deliberate choice. "What's really exciting about ChatGPT Work is that it's a virtual machine in the cloud that's always on for you," Geri explained. You can start a project on a phone and finish it on a laptop. Geri highlighted mobile creation as a capability missing from other tools, allowing users to build a website from a phone while at the beach.

MCP-Powered Integrations

The agent relies on plugins based on the Model Context Protocol standard to connect to workplace services. Geri confirmed these integrations are all MCP-based. The system surfaces suggested tasks based on the user's role. For example, a product manager might see options to evaluate AI systems or manage calendar conflicts. Key integrations include:

  • Slack and Teams: Catch up on messages or summarize channels
  • Gmail and Google Calendar: Handle email threads and reschedule meetings
  • GitHub: Access code repositories and create pull requests

Support for multiple Gmail accounts is on the roadmap, Geri said.

Why This Matters

ChatGPT Work extends OpenAI's internal agent Codex, which has seen exponential adoption across the company, to all paying users. Geri said the mission is to democratize the kind of autonomous task completion Codex demonstrated. This launch arrives as OpenAI pursues a potential IPO with valuations between $730 billion and $852 billion. By giving Plus subscribers access to a persistent cloud agent, OpenAI challenges workplace software incumbents and positions itself as a platform for the future of work. The shift from question-and-answer chatbot to autonomous agent could reshape how millions of professionals handle daily workflows.

Availability and Rollout

ChatGPT Work begins rolling out to Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, with Plus and Business users receiving access over the following days. Geri emphasized that including Plus subscribers in the initial launch is a strategic decision. "It's accessible to all paid plans, including Plus users, which in my opinion is a really big feat," he said, tying the move to OpenAI's broader goal of bringing powerful AI tools to many people.
