An engineer at Nanya Technology faces up to 10 years in prison after an elaborate attempt to steal DRAM manufacturing secrets ended when the camera he used broadcasted its location through wireless signals. The case highlights the persistent threat of technology theft by Chinese state-linked recruiters and the vulnerabilities inherent in even sophisticated espionage methods.
The Attempt
Yeh joined Nanya Technology in 2022 and by early 2025 began communicating with Chinese recruiters about employment in the People's Republic. He submitted his resignation in February 2026 but retained access until mid-April. On three occasions in late March and early April 2026, he entered Nanya's restricted office areas during weekends and late hours carrying his Insta360 X4 Air action camera concealed inside snack packages.
Once inside, he used his legitimate credentials to log into Nanya's virtual machines and opened internal research documents. He then used the camera to photograph and record information related to DRAM process technologies and production methods. After his resignation, he retained the captured data.
How He Was Caught
Nanya's IT security team detected anomalous wireless signals originating from within the restricted facilities. By triangulating the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi emissions, they pinpointed the camera's location and cross-referenced access records. The investigation tied the signals directly to Yeh's movements and activity logs.
The Charges
The New Taipei District Prosecutors Office charged Yeh under Taiwan's Trade Secrets Act with unauthorized reproduction of trade secrets intended for use in The People's Republic of China. He also faces a breach of trust charge under the Criminal Code. Forensic analysis of his equipment found no evidence that the data had been transmitted to any party outside Nanya, a factor that could reduce his sentence.

This case underscores the vulnerability of semiconductor intellectual property in an era of intensifying competition between Taiwan and China.
