The AI boom could add as much as $44.4 trillion to the U.S. economy by 2030, but the windfall may come at a steep cost for knowledge workers, according to a new economic analysis from Anthropic. The company released a set of economic scenarios that model how rapidly artificial intelligence might reshape the labor market over the next four years. While the numbers suggest extraordinary growth, they also point to stark trade-offs for workers in roles like coding, customer service and other white-collar fields.
Three Scenarios for Full Automation
Anthropic divided its projections into three paths based on how deeply AI infiltrates the economy. Each scenario assumes increasing degrees of automation for tasks now done by humans. The company used a framework that categorizes work into fully automated, augmented and manual tasks, using a nurse's day as an illustrative example.
In the extreme case, Anthropic predicts that knowledge workers would face a 10% wage drop while manual labor becomes increasingly prized. The company notes that reaching this stage would likely require recursively self-improving AI, effectively using one AI system to build better successors.
The Human Cost of Automation
The firm's projections carry an undercurrent of disruption. In the substantial scenario, it warns that coders and call center agents may have to switch to fields like electrical work and nursing. Unemployment, however, is expected to stay within historical ranges, even though modern U.S. history includes events like the Great Depression. Anthropic acknowledges that job churn will increase but says the process works well from a macroeconomic standpoint.
The extreme scenario paints a bleaker picture. With essentially no new knowledge tasks created, many white-collar jobs disappear entirely. AI systems take over triage scheduling, supply management and dashboard monitoring, leaving humans to handle tasks that bots cannot perform, like physical patient care or manual repairs. Those who can adapt to hands-on roles are expected to see higher wages, while displaced knowledge workers face a difficult transition.
Why This Matters
The analysis raises a fundamental question about how the trillion-dollar windfall would be distributed. Anthropic admits this is a challenge and offers no concrete solution. Wealth inequality in the U.S. already sits at its highest level in decades, and a surge in GDP concentrated among AI owners and manual laborers could deepen that divide. Policymakers face pressure to design retraining programs and social safety nets for workers in vulnerable fields. Without such measures, the economic shock may outpace the benefits of growth.
The report also signals that the timeline for disruption is shorter than many expect. The extreme scenario assumes widespread adoption within four years, which would outpace the gradual transitions seen with earlier technologies. That means industries and governments have little time to prepare for a labor market that could look radically different by the end of the decade.
