New evidence suggests SpaceX is working on a battery-powered version of its compact Starlink Mini dish. Code strings found in a May firmware release point to an integrated battery that could eliminate the need for a separate power source.

University researcher Jinwei Zhao discovered the hints. The firmware contains a section labeled 'message DishBatteryStats' according to PCMag. This section includes fields for battery charge level and other data. If the dish simply relied on an external battery pack, such firmware code would be unnecessary.

The Starlink Mini already packs satellite internet into a small form factor. Adding a built-in battery would make it fully portable. Users could set up internet anywhere without a power outlet. This would benefit van dwellers, remote workers and emergency responders.

SpaceX has not confirmed the development. The firmware code is a strong indicator. Hardware changes typically follow software preparation.

What the Firmware Reveals

The 'DishBatteryStats' message includes fields for state_of_charge and other battery metrics. This suggests the dish itself houses the battery, not an accessory. The code was shared on GitHub by Zhao for public review.

SpaceX regularly updates Starlink firmware. Features often appear in code before official announcements. The battery integration would be a logical next step for the Mini.
