Sony has turned its PlayStation 5 into a free television service for U.S. users, adding more than 100 live channels directly to the console's main menu. The move turns the gaming device into a full entertainment hub without requiring a separate subscription.
Sony's FAST Expansion Into Gaming Hardware
By embedding live TV channels into the PS5 dashboard, Sony is leveraging its existing entertainment assets. The company owns Sony Pictures Television and Crunchyroll, giving it a library of content it can stream at little extra cost. The free ad-supported model, known in the industry as FAST, has grown rapidly as cord cutters seek cheaper alternatives to cable and subscription streaming services.
Available channels include ad-supported versions of popular movie networks, classic TV show channels, sports highlight feeds and 24-hour news broadcasts. The content does not require a PlayStation Plus membership or any additional payment.
Gaming Consoles Become All-in-One Entertainment Centers
Sony's move follows a broader industry trend. Rival Microsoft has added free ad-supported TV to Xbox consoles through partnerships with services like Pluto TV and Tubi. Nintendo has not pursued the same path, keeping its Switch focused on gaming and a limited set of streaming apps. By integrating FAST directly into the home screen, Sony removes the friction of switching to a separate app, making live TV as easy to reach as launching a game.
The PS5 already supports Netflix, Disney+, YouTube and other streaming apps. Adding live TV gives users a reason to keep the console on even when they are not playing games, increasing time spent on Sony's platform and opening new advertising revenue opportunities for the company.
Why This Matters
The addition of free live TV changes the value proposition of owning a PS5. For budget conscious households, the console now replaces the need for a separate streaming device or a cable subscription for basic live channels. The move also gives Sony a direct advertising channel into living rooms, allowing it to sell ad space on its own hardware without sharing revenue with third party app providers. As gaming hardware margins tighten, recurring ad income could become a meaningful secondary revenue stream. For the industry, this blurs the line between gaming devices and media receivers, accelerating the decline of traditional TV distribution.
PS5 owners should note that content is ad-supported, meaning commercial breaks will interrupt programming, similar to broadcast television. Channel selection may change over time as Sony negotiates new licensing agreements. Those outside the U.S. will have to wait for any eventual international expansion.
