Ring has begun deploying a new encryption system that limits its ability to share video footage with law enforcement. The feature, called TAKE, changes how the company handles access requests and could alter long-standing tensions between home security and privacy.

What You Need to Know

TAKE encrypts each Ring camera's footage with keys that rotate every five minutes. On newer models encryption happens on the device itself; on older ones it occurs when footage reaches the cloud. Ring cannot decrypt footage without the keys, which means it cannot hand over readable video to police unless the user consents or a separate process is followed.

The Encryption Shift

Ring has faced years of criticism over its partnerships with police departments and the ease with which officers could request video without a warrant. TAKE, which stands for Trusted Access Key Encryption, directly addresses that concern. By default, every Ring camera now encrypts footage in a way that the company itself cannot break.

This is a significant departure from earlier practices. Previously Ring could access stored video and share it with authorities when asked. The new system removes that technical capability entirely unless the user explicitly chooses to share.

How TAKE Works

TAKE operates using a rotating key model. Each camera generates fresh encryption keys every five minutes. The keys are stored only on the device or in a user-controlled environment. Ring retains no escrow copy.

  • On-device encryption: Newer Ring camera models perform encryption locally before footage is uploaded. Keys never leave the device.
  • Cloud-based encryption: Older models send footage to Ring's servers where encryption happens. Keys are still outside Ring's direct control.
  • Five-minute key rotation: New keys are generated every five minutes. Even if one key were compromised only a short window of footage could be decrypted.

Implications for Law Enforcement Requests

Police departments that relied on Ring video for investigations will now face a new barrier. Without a user's voluntary consent or a court order compelling the user to share the keys authorities cannot decrypt footage. Ring itself cannot comply with a simple request for video because it no longer possesses the ability to read the data.

This does not eliminate all police access. Users can still share footage directly with law enforcement if they choose. The change removes Ring's role as a gatekeeper that could hand over footage without user involvement. Privacy advocates have long argued that such gatekeeping created an implicit consent problem where users might not know their video was being shared.
