How the Connection Starts
The process begins when an iPhone approaches a compatible vehicle. The car's head unit broadcasts a Bluetooth signal. The iPhone detects it and initiates a secure pairing. This step uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to conserve battery. Once paired, the two devices establish a Wi-Fi connection, usually via Wi-Fi Direct or through the vehicle's onboard network.
This handoff from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi is automatic. The driver does not see the switch. The iPhone treats the car's display as a secondary screen, mirroring a limited set of apps approved by Apple. Wi-Fi provides enough bandwidth for real-time navigation and high-quality audio streaming without noticeable lag.
Why Two Connections Are Necessary
