AI voice cloning scams are costing Americans hundreds of millions. Google is rolling out a new tool in its Phone by Google app to fight back. The feature warns users when an incoming call appears to be from a known contact but is actually a scammer using AI to mimic that person's voice.
How the Detection Works
Google's system looks for signs of number spoofing combined with AI-generated voice. When the app detects that a caller is using a cloned voice and a faked contact number, it displays an alert on the screen. The user can then hang up before falling for the scam.
Google said the feature runs on device, processing call data in real time. It does not need to send audio to the cloud. This protects user privacy and allows the detection to work even without an internet connection.
Why This Matters
The FBI reported that Americans lost over $893 million to AI-powered scams in 2025. Many of these attacks involve voice cloning. Scammers call from a number that appears to belong to a family member, friend or authority figure. The victim hears a voice they trust and is tricked into sending money or sharing sensitive information.
Older adults are especially vulnerable. A study by the Federal Trade Commission found that people over 60 are three times more likely to lose money to impersonation scams than younger adults. Google's new alert gives them a simple way to verify the caller before it is too late.
A Growing Threat Landscape
AI voice cloning tools have become cheap and easy to access. Scammers can clone a voice from just a few seconds of audio found on social media or voicemail. The combination of number spoofing and voice cloning makes the attack highly convincing.
Google is not alone in addressing this problem. Other tech companies are also developing countermeasures. But by integrating detection directly into the default phone app, Google reaches millions of users automatically. The feature is rolling out to Pixel devices first and will expand to other Android phones in the coming months.
The update highlights an important shift in mobile security. Traditional scam filters focus on text messages and spam calls. Voice cloning requires a new approach. Google's solution may set a standard for how platforms handle AI-generated fraud in the future.
