Bluecore Energy has closed a $10 million pre-seed funding round to build portable nuclear reactors designed to operate on barges. The startup aims to deliver mobile, low-carbon power to maritime vessels, coastal communities and remote industrial sites where traditional grid infrastructure is unavailable or unreliable.
A Mobile Nuclear Solution
Bluecore Energy's concept centers on small modular reactors (SMRs) mounted on barges that can be towed to different locations. The company claims this design reduces construction timelines and allows reactors to be factory-built and then transported by water. This model could serve port facilities, offshore platforms or disaster relief zones that require rapid, resilient power.
Maritime nuclear power is not new. Naval reactors have operated safely for decades. Bluecore Energy, however, is adapting the technology for civilian commercial use where cost, regulation and public perception remain significant barriers.
Pre-Seed Round Details
The $10 million pre-seed round was led by Slauson & Co., with participation from other undisclosed investors. Proceeds will fund design work, licensing activities and initial site assessments. Bluecore Energy did not disclose a timeline for a prototype or commercial deployment.
The round size is notable given the capital intensity of nuclear development. Most nuclear startups require hundreds of millions to reach demonstration phase. This early-stage investment suggests investors see a viable path through regulatory streamlining and modular production.
Why This Matters
Portable nuclear reactors could reshape energy access for coastal and island communities that currently rely on diesel generators. The maritime shipping industry, under pressure to decarbonize, also represents a large potential market. But the technology must overcome multiple obstacles. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has not yet certified a transportable reactor design. Public opposition to nuclear power, especially near populated coastlines, remains strong. Insurance and liability frameworks for mobile reactors are undefined.
If Bluecore Energy succeeds, it would prove that nuclear power can be as deployable as a solar farm, with far higher energy density. The company's barge approach also creates a path for eventual decommissioning: the reactor can be towed back to a central facility rather than requiring on-site dismantling. That advantage could lower lifecycle costs and reduce long-term environmental liabilities.
